Cruise description
Cruise on an iconic ship | Gdansk
Climb aboard a replica of a Galarith-style riverboat and experience an unforgettable cruise on the Motława River! These ships experienced their heyday in the 18th century – at the time they were one of the main means of transporting timber and goods in Poland. In the old days, the galleys were crewed by 6 to 8 ferrymen who were responsible for floating the cargo on the river. It is worth noting that the ferry tradition is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. So a cruise with our skipper is not only a way of spending leisure time, but also a way of returning to one’s roots and communing with traditions. History lovers are sure to be thrilled!
Cruise on the Motlawa River | Where do we start?
What is the route? Our cruise on the Motlawa River starts from the port of Galar, right next to the Gdansk shipyard. This place is steeped in incredible history, which influenced the destiny of not only our country, but of the entire European Union! It was the Gdansk shipyard that was at the centre of the workers’ strike in 1980, which ended with the signing of the August agreements. This event not only initiated the formation of free trade unions, but above all inspired many other European countries to fight for freedom and democracy.
Gdańsk cruise | Itinerary Route itinerary
Step aboard the galara, sit back and enjoy the delights of our first destination, the Old Town centre. From the boat you can see, among other things:
- On the territory of Teutoon Palace,
- The Long Wharf with the water gates leading into the city,
- a famous wooden crane from the 15th century,
- charming old town houses and their new surroundings.
Continue your journey admiring other monuments and new developments in Ołowianka and Spichrzów, two islands in the centre of Gdańsk. The first is located on the border of the Motława and Kiel Canal. It was created as a result of canal digging in 1576. At that time it was called Szafarnia – nowadays we can find a street called Ołowianka. Granary Island, on the other hand, is the more affluent area of Gdańsk, where we can admire exclusive yachts moored in the harbours. Sailing along the Motlawa River in a galley, we can also see a unique harbour crane – the largest in medieval Europe.
A cruise around Gdańsk is a unique and unrepeatable opportunity to see up close the specialised ships, historic buildings and quays of the Gdańsk port. The excursion ends in the same place where it started – in the Galari harbour near the Gdańsk shipyard. If you need to disembark a little closer to Gdańsk’s Old Town, just let the captain know – for one sincere smile, you’re sure to get a deal.
