Granary Island
The Green Bridge connects the main part of the old city with Granary Island. By the name alone, it’s not hard to guess what such a sloka lized on the island. It can even be said that the granaries were here before the island became an island! In the 16th century, when the New Motlawa, the eastern channel flowing around the island, was dug, more than 300 granaries already stood here. This gives an idea of the origin of Danzig’s wealth was derived from trade, among other things, in grain imported by pol skimmers. In addition to grain, the granaries also stored other goods reaching Gdansk by the same waterway-hops, flax, co nopie, honey, wood, cloth and more.

The island was closely guarded, as there was a lot of looting, which nota bene were punished very severely, even by death. Access to the island was guarded by elevated bridges for the night and… dogs unleashed after dark to defend the property located in the granaries. The island has experienced both floods The city’s water supply was high (during the largest, in 1540, high water lasted for 2 ), as well as fires, one of the most tragic of which was started in 1516 by members of the band of Matterns roaming Gdansk Matterns.

In the 19th century, a railroad line was brought to the island, which greatly increased the functionality of the granaries and warehouses. At the beginning of the 20th century, Granary Island still retained its former purpose. The honor of a large warehouse. This came to an end with World War II towa. As a result of air raids and bombing, almost all of the island’s infrastructure was destroyed. Only 3 granaries survived: the Steffen, Deo and Wisloujście. So far, 36 more have been rebuilt and are mainly housed in apartments, offices and cultural institutions. However, many granaries are still in ruins. Among them: Far Way, Woli Łeb, Corpse Skull, White Steed, Red Lion, Prince, Hungarian, Turk, Smithy, Noah’s Ark, Red Hen. It is worth mentioning that most of Danzig’s granaries had names. Over the centuries such names, now historical, appeared several hundred.
