St. Mary's Gate and St. Mary's Street

St. Mary’s Gate is slightly younger than Chlebnicka Gate – was built at the end of the 15th century, but represents features of the same architectural style, namely Flemish Gothic. Unlike the Chlebnicka Gate, however, it has not survived in its present form since the Middle Ages. Destroyed during World War II, it was not rebuilt until 1958-1961. The gate lost its defensive character quite early and was adapted for residential purposes as early as the 16th century.

On the Motława side, it is decorated with three coats of arms: those of the Republic of Poland, Royal Prussia and Gdansk. The coat of arms of Gdansk (also placed over the passage from St. Mary’s Street) already has a newer form than the one on the Chlebnicka Gate. It was granted to the city by Casimir Jagiellon, crowning two crosses with a royal crown.

Passing through St. Mary’s Gate from the Motlawa River, one emerges along St. Mary’s Street directly into St. Mary’s Church. To make it even more “Marian” – the street is located in the former “St. Mary’s Quarter”. However, at the time when this part of the city was so named, the street was called Panieńska and was much shorter, as it did not run into the Motława due to the marshy area. Numerous shoemakers’ workshops were located here.
