St. John's Gate and Stall Gate

St. John’s Gate – another water gate of Gdansk with an originally defensive and economic significance. It was built in the middle of the 15th century, but lost its military value rather quickly, as early as the 16th century. It served for some time as a warehouse, and was eventually converted into a tenement house. As a result of warfare it was completely destroyed – only the brick passage survived. It was only rebuilt in its present form in the 1970s, giving the building the look known from 19th-century illustrations. Today it houses the headquarters of the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians.

Stall Gate – the last surviving water gate of the Main City to the north. Like the Chlebnicka and St. Mary’s gates, it is built in the style of Gothic architecture with Flemish influences. However, unlike those gates, its body was additionally equipped with a side wing. The depth of this wing was adjusted to the development of the eastern frontage of the Fish Market area. The Stall Gate is further characterized by the asymmetrical placement of the passage. Above the passage itself, on the Motława side, three coats of arms already known from St. Mary’s Gate were placed – those of the Commonwealth, Royal Prussia and Gdansk. The gate was rebuilt many times, changing, among other things, the shape and number of turrets. As a result of warfare, like other gates, this one was also significantly damaged. It was rebuilt in the 1950s. An interesting fact related to the Stall Gate is that Zbigniew Cybulski lived there in the late 1950s. As experts instruct, the plaque on the wall gives the wrong date for this fact – 1963; the actor lived here from 1959-1960.
